biography text
An obscure figure, Mayhew features in a borough court of early 1420, when a jury presented him for assaulting a fellow burgess.2 Maldon ct. roll, 1420, D/B 3/3/12, m. 1d. He became bailiff of Maldon within a year of his only known Parliament.3 It is assumed that William Mayhew of Colchester, appointed searcher of ships in the port of Ipswich in 1417, was a namesake, but it is unclear whether the searcher was the same William Mayhew who exercised that office in the 1430s: CFR, xiv. 206; xvi. 7-8, 254.
